If you’re new to crypto, or even if you’re not, it’s time to dig up our evergreen content on inspecting any DeFi transactions before approving them with your hardware wallet.
We’re reminding you of this because of a series of frontend attacks which have compromised DeFi protocols including Trader Joe and Velodrome.
A frontend attack means that the website used by a protocol gets replaced with malicious code. This allows the attacker to submit an instruction to transfer your wallet balance to an address they control. This appears as a normal Metamask prompt when you interact with the website.
Unless you know how to read transactions and are diligent, you wouldn’t spot the difference and could easily approve a transaction which steals all your funds.
Even smart people and crypto natives like Nexus Mutual founder Hugh Karp have lost millions to this simple hack.
