I know enough about options to not use them in crypto (don't think I have an edge and afraid of low liquidity) but the topic is fascinating (looking forward to your view on PERP also).
Some questions if you don't mind :
1. Is there a VIX equivalent in crypto or ways to evaluate vol?
2. Is there the equivalent of implied vol and realized vol for each contract? (and does the trading platoforms show it?)
3. Is there equivalent of LEAPS? How is the liquidity on those?
4. I was going to ask wich tokens of protocols you analyse as the best in this field but it sems you'll cover that in next posts?
1. I think Skew does (or did) provide a volatility term structure as part of its paid service. Or you can build it yourself from IV data.
2. The good DeFi options platforms show the IV on the deal ticket. Deribit (CEX, market leader) shows IV on all strikes and tenors. https://www.deribit.com/options/ETH
3. I don't think so. Liquidity should be low. Maybe check out Paradigm / OTC.
Was getting too turbo already, all three of the textbooks go into smile. (and that's relevant to the next protocol we're going to review, but not something we'll do in depth too technical)
Food for thought if you're considering trading options: they are a zero-sum game. And from my experience, if you're not FAR right on the bell curve, you're going to get crushed in a zero-sum game.
So most people shouldn't trade options. Ever. This may or may not be from recent experience.
This article was a wakeup call for me. I literally got rekt hard the last month thinking I could play the options game and all I did was completely fuck up a decent portion of my overall gains this year. Thanks for reminding me i'm just a simple retard wit small brain. I needed this.
Fantastic article. Maybe not suitable for this newsletter, but would love some content recommendations with a similar writing style to yours that go into where the heck black-scholes came from, what's its rationale, what assumptions does it make, what alternative models exist, etc. I'll read the textbooks if I have to, but it'd be great if they wrote like you did. ;)
There's the binomial option pricing model (for American style options) which has some advantages over BS. Honestly the 3 textbooks I recommended are good and worth checking out if you want to go deeper, from memory they cover your questions.
Feedback on writing style much appreciated, we write for readers and it's nice to get feedback whether we're on the mark or need to do something to improve!
Where can a US based person trade options on computer coins? I trade options on my traditional porfolio, but not sure where the best pricing and fulfillment is in the defi or cefi crypto space.
We're covering some DeFi protocols in our next post. Not sure there are any CeFi providers catering to the US. (don't live in the US so don't know sorry)
Lots of CT buzz about dopex. I know nothing. I’m a simple ape on the finance stuff. But they have a token, wen defieducation article

Great article! Wish Deribit was available for Americans. All I want to do is sell covered options and capture the vol!
You can do this in DeFi, stand by for our next post!
